Whether you have lost a loved one, or suffered harm yourself, we have a team of expert lawyers specialising in inquest law, public inquiries and other fact-finding court hearings.

These legal inquiries may be the first or only opportunity for you to have your questions heard and answered. In is an area of law that can prove confusing and daunting to you, especially at a time when you may be grieving.

We represent you before, during and after all forms of formal hearings, including different types of inquests held by a Coroner, and public inquiries, ensuring you receive the answers to your questions – and the compensation for a death or loss that you deserve.

Public inquiries play a key role in investigating some of the most tragic and complex issues in society so they never happen again. There have been more than 80 public inquiries since 1990 in the UK.

Grenfell Tower, historic child sex abuse, and a contaminated blood scandal in the NHS that left thousands infected with HIV and hepatitis C in the 1970s and 1980s.

These are just a few examples of the eight Government public inquiries that are currently live.

Previous public inquiries that involved, and touched the lives of, so many people have included Hillsborough; Stephen Lawrence; Piper Alpha; Shipman; Bloody Sunday; the Soham murders; the Marchioness disaster; the Alder Hey organ transplant scandal; the NHS in Mid-Staffordshire; Levesen; Foot and Mouth; Victoria Climbie and the Iraq war.

Here at Milners, we have developed a growing specialism in representing core participants and interested parties at high-profile public inquiries such as these, as well as at inquests and other fact-finding hearings.

Our inquest and inquiries team in Leeds, Harrogate and Pontefract draws upon our expertise to represent you at inquests. This is a different type of inquiry held by a coroner in a local Coroner’s court. An inquest is held to determine how, where and when a person died – and to make recommendations if appropriate.

We have represented families of bereaved people at inquests for many years and guide and support you through the whole hearing, which is held in public.

In the majority of cases where a loved one has died, the death can be signed off and recorded by a doctor,

However in certain circumstances – such as a road traffic accident, industrial disease, negligence or failings, a death in custody, or if a crime has been committed a death is reported to the Coroner by the authorities so an inquest can be opened.
